Deputy Campus Counsel

The Deputy Campus Counsels key responsibilities include the following:

Providing legal advice and consultation to the entire campus community in areas which include health care law, business law, employment and other human resource activities, as well as specialized legal service unique to the academic setting of a university medical center. This includes campus operations based at other locations such as San Francisco General and Mt. Zion Hospital the UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program, and the San Francisco Veterans Administration Medical Center.
Responsibilities for some of the more significant matters handled by the OLA. This would include, but not be limited to, compliance issues, investigative audits, faculty and staff grievance and disciplinary matters, conflict of interest issues, medical staff and house staff matters, student academic and disciplinary matters, and providing litigation support to attorneys in the University of California Office of the Presidents Office of the General Counsel (OGC) as well as retained outside counsel.
Providing advice to various campus and medical center standing or ad hoc committees as assigned by the Chief Campus Counsel. All attorneys in the OLA are expect to engage in proactive lawyering to assist clients in developing policy and processes to reduce risk for legal dispute and promote compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Acting on behalf of the Chief Campus Counsel in her absence. This would involve attending meetings as required such as the Chancellors Cabinet and Executive Committee meetings, providing needed advice and counsel in response to inquiries from campus administrators, the Deans and their respective staffs, as well as faculty. In the absence of the Chief Campus Counsel, the Deputy Campus Counsel will also be responsible for and will direct the activities of the OLA generally, including the management of other staff.
Under the supervision of the Chief Campus Counsel, coordinate case management of matters being handled by attorneys in the OGC and/or retained outside counsel representing the University. In addition to providing consultative, advisory and representative legal services to campus administrators, faculty, and staff, Campus Counsel in the Office of Legal Affairs also responds to inquiries from members of the pubic, and appropriately directs such inquires to other campus departments or outside legal resources as needed.

Required:

J.D. degree, admission to the California bar
15 or more years of complex, high-level experience after receiving law degree, including three or more years experience managing attorneys.
Legal skills, knowledge of health care law, employment law, and legal issues unique to academic medical centers; abilities gained from extensive experience in the practice of law.
Advanced skills in oral communication for presentations to all levels of campus leadership; outstanding interpersonal skill to work with a diverse group of faculty and administrators.
High level of skill in setting priorities, willingness to be flexible, accomplishing work, and being responsive in a timely manner in a very intense and busy campus legal office.

Preferred:

Excellent negotiation, legal research, judgment, knowledge of University and Regental policies, writing and drafting skills.
Extensive knowledge of University policies and procedures.
